RIBA Journal Spotlights Our Smart Home Vision

We are incredibly proud to announce that KSR Architects has been featured in a recent RIBA Journal
article, celebrating our involvement in the insightful conference, “Designing the Smart Home of the
Future.”

Organised by RIBAJ in association with CEDIA, the global industry association for smart-
home professionals, the event brought together leading minds to explore the evolving landscape of
intelligent residential design.

Our Partner, Guy Adam Ailion, was a key speaker at the conference, contributing valuable
perspectives on the critical integration of technology within contemporary homes. The article
highlights how the conference aimed to provide designers with essential guidance on working
effectively with homeowners and smart-home consultants.

The core message resonated strongly: “The question isn’t whether you bring technology into
the home, it’s how we do it.” This sentiment underscores the sophisticated approach required to
seamlessly blend cutting-edge functionality with architectural integrity and client aspirations.

Guy shared his expertise on the inherent challenges and creative opportunities present in smart home
design, noting the constant: “tug of war between the dreams and aspirations of the client
and what’s actually possible.” He spoke about how this dynamic, particularly with ambitious
clients, often necessitates innovative thinking and deep collaboration.

The RIBA Journal feature specifically highlighted KSR’s work on the ambitious IO House, a 2,000m2
London home designed for a tech entrepreneur. This project, a prime example of integrating
technology from the ground up, was envisioned as “somewhere between a home and a playground.”
Guy elaborated on how KSR worked in close partnership with smart-home specialists SMC-UK,
ensuring that the building’s form informed the strategy for servicing its complex technological
systems. This early and integrated collaboration was key to achieving the client’s vision, including
bespoke features like a light-up “floating” staircase and extensive LED installations, all while
maintaining a sleek, minimalist aesthetic where “there are no speakers to be seen.”

We are thrilled that KSR Architects’ commitment to innovative, client-focused, and technologically
integrated design has been recognised by the RIBA Journal. This feature is a testament to our team’s
dedication to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in creating truly intelligent and inspiring
homes.
