With a brief to provide an exceptional modern house on a beautiful site in rural Ireland, KSR started by researching local buildings to understand their scale, form and materiality. The design draws inspiration from the surrounding agricultural architecture, creating a connection with its rural setting. We reinterpreted the local vernacular to create a pair of contemporary barns with a glazed link which embrace a landscaped courtyard.

Sustainability was a cornerstone of the design. The home incorporates eco-conscious features such as ground-source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels, all while utilising locally sourced materials. The pared back palette of sheet metal roofing and rendered walls combines with large format glazing for a stunning, crisply detailed contemporary family home with dramatic internal spaces which sits lightly in the landscape.
This project is a thoughtful response to the clients’ aspirations and the unique beauty of the Irish countryside. It makes the most of countryside views and results in a charming, sustainable home that meets their needs whilst exceeding their dreams.
