The Retreat

Project Type : Contemporary / Private Homes

Services : Architecture

Location : London

Size : 150 sqm

Status : Planning Permission

The Retreat is located behind the client’s family home. The site is part of a landlocked backland development and requires the redevelopment of one in a pair of adjoining residential units. It also has the intriguing challenge of only being accessed via a small passageway through an adjacent building.

The proposed house operates as a stand-alone one-bed dwelling but can also provide additional leisure facilities for the main home, including a basement pool. Despite the site sitting within a Conservation Area, KSR convinced Westminster that a contemporary ‘gem’ was an appropriate design response.

Careful modelling was required in order to optimise floorspace whilst ensuring privacy for both the proposed home and neighbouring properties on this tightly constrained backland site. The mellow natural palette and introduction of green walls and green roofs ensures that any impact on the environment is kept to a minimum.
